International Workshop on Sustainability, Transitions, and Discourse at Heidelberg University

The Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE) and the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) are excited to present a two-day workshop on “Sustainability, Transitions, and Discourse” at Heidelberg University, taking place from November 16 to November 17, 2023, at the International Academic Forum Heidelberg.

The workshop will delve into a range of critical topics, including EU-level narratives on fossil fuels, energy security, and ecological transitions in Latin America. Additionally, it will explore the influence of social mobilization and climate change on socio-ecological transformation. Participants will analyze the dynamics of justice negotiation in sustainability transitions and compare scenarios involving clean hydrogen exports with the environmental impact of dirty fuel on fjords. The event will offer insights into energy transition discourses and development paradigms in Colombia, accompanied by discussions on transitions in the South, with a particular focus on state and elite dynamics. This promises to provide valuable perspectives on global sustainability, transitions, and discourse.

Renata Motta and Marco Teixeira, both affiliated with Heidelberg University and project leaders of Food for Justice, will present their groundbreaking research on “Social Mobilization and Climate Change: The Contributions of Agrarian Movements and Popular Feminisms to a Socio-Ecological Transformation.” Their insights into the intersection of social mobilization, climate change, and the contributions of agrarian movements will be a focal point of the workshop.
