Eryka Galindo will participate in the International Symposium “Care that Matters, Matters of Care”
Eryka Galindo from FFJ will present her research at the International Symposium: Care that Matters, Matters of Care, taking place on October 14-15, 2024, hosted by Mecila in Brazil. This symposium coincides with Brazil’s G20 presidency and aims to address gender, class, and ethnic inequalities through care policies.
Galindo will present her talk on October 15th during Panel II: Putting Care on the Political Agenda at 14:00. In this panel, she will be joined by other esteemed scholars. Raquel Rojas (Freie Universität Berlin / Mecila Postdoctoral Investigator) and Laura Flamand (El Colegio de México / Mecila Principal Investigator) will firstly discuss “Care in the Polycrisis Era: Impacts on Conviviality/Inequality.”
Secondly, Eryka Galindo (Universität Heidelberg, Germany) will continue with her will present her talk titled “Inequalities, Food, and Care Work: Portraits of Pandemic Times in Brazil”. Next, Regina Stela Vieira (Cebrap / Universidade Federal de São Paulo – UNIFESP, Brazil) will present “Care Rights in Brazil: Inequalities and Challenges Seen from the Global Care Policy Index.” Lastly, Jana Silvermann (Universidade Federal do ABC, Brazil) will speak on “Gender, Race, and Collective Action: The Intersectional Union Strategies of Domestic Workers in the City of São Paulo.”
The panel will be moderated by Barbara Göbel (Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut / Mecila Principal Investigator, Germany), and the discussants will be Miriam Nobre (SOF – Sempreviva Organização Feminista, Brazil) and Izadora Xavier do Monte (Mecila Junior Fellow 2024, Brazil).
Galindo’s presentation will delve into findings from the Food for Justice research group, utilizing data from a national public opinion survey conducted in Brazil in late 2020. The survey revealed that 59.4% of households faced food insecurity, with 70.3% of domestic and care responsibilities falling solely on women. Her research highlights the critical intersection of food insecurity, care work, and gender inequalities, advocating for broader discussions on these issues that disproportionately affect women, especially in vulnerable socio-economic contexts.
